The north coast or Amber Coast
Puerto Plata is known for having one of the largest seams of amber and for its Victorian houses. Sosua, Domincan Republic´s diving “hot spot” and Cabarete for boardsport lovers.
The north east coast
Samana Peninsula, the famous fishing village of Las Terrenas, renowned for its beautiful white sandy beaches bordered by coconut trees —Playa Bonita, Playa Coson, Playa Las Ballenas and Playa Popy— and for its authentic Dominican lifestyle night and day. Cayo Levantado, a small quiet island accessible from the port of Santa Barbara de Samana, and Samana Bay where the humpback whales meet and mate each year. Los Haïtises National Park, a maze of deep fjords and mangrove swamps. Discover the typical village of El Limon and the El Limon Waterfall plunging down 50 meters of rock face.
The south coast
Santo Domingo is an astonishing capital city with its colonial area classed as UNESCO World Heritage, a city bordered by the Malecón (Dominican version of an English promenade) and abounding with places of historical and cultural interest, as well as, and most particularly, entertainment. A succession of beaches stretch from Boca Chica to San Pedro de Macoris, one as beautiful as the next, such as Juan Dolio protected by a coral reef.
The south east coast
La Romana, departure point for visiting the artists´ village of Altos de Chavon. Take a day trip to Isla Catalina, a wonderful islet with heavenly beaches just a few kilometers off the coast. The town of San Pedro de Macoris offers some interesting architecture with its large colonial-style houses once belonging to the rich sugarcane farmers. Bayahibe, renowned for its beach with turquoise blue waters. Take a boat from there to the island of Saona to see the birds, manatees and dolphins. And, at the very tip of the country Punta Cana and Bavaro are the best known seaside resorts in Dominican Republic and ideal for scuba divers.
The south west coast
Main wealth is "Larimar", a semi-precious light blue stone. Almost on the border with Haiti is the salty Enriquillo Lake and Isla Cabritos making up a protected area where crocodiles, enormous iguanas and a variety of bird species can be seen, including the Caribbean pink flamingo. Barahona is known for its busy port and coffee plantations hidden away in the nearby mountains.
The country is divided into beaches, agricultural plains and mountains in the center, Pico Duarte being the highest point, and Jarabacoa in the heart of luxuriant vegetation. The province of Santiago de Los Caballeros known is world famous for its tobacco plantations and blue amber mines. La Vega for its carnival parades.
